SHERMAN’S WAY (2008) USA It’s a combination coming-of-age and buddy film. Wait! Don’t turn the page. Sherman’s Way, directed by Craig M. Saavedra from a screenplay by Thomas R. Nance, takes those old thematic chestnuts and whips up an entertaining comic confection. Sherman Black (Michael Shulman) is a Yale law student whose girlfriend dumps him because he’s yawningly unadventurous. By happenstance he connects with a whimsical free spirit (OK, irresponsible guy) named Palmer (James LeGros) and a Napa wine country adventure in an old red MG roadster is assured.
On the way to emotional growth, Sherman is helped by a world-class chef, now an auto mechanic, who escaped from the rat race, and a perky young woman, of course. LeGros carries the show with an endearing and patient personality, and Brooke Nevin as love-interest Addy provides flirtatious, oddball charm. If Sherman can’t learn how to be a mensch with all these role models, he’s hopeless, and Shulman makes his transformation gradual and convincing. |
